What Temperature Should I Set My AC During The Summer?

August 10, 2021 | Blog

With the glaring Pensacola sun heating up our homes, we’d all prefer to run our AC systems all day long. We want to feel that frosty air combat the summer temperature, but is there a number that our AC’s should be set at?

Express Air has all the tips, tricks and knowledge you need to make sure you are enduring summer AC friendly. Keep reading to learn the best AC summer temperature and some other ways you can stay cool without changing the thermostat.

Your Thermostat In The Summer

While we’d all like to have 72-degree air blowing through our vents all day long during the summer, professionals don’t recommend setting your thermostat this low for several reasons.

  • Energy Is Expensive — Your AC will have to use way more energy to keep your home at 72 degrees. This means that your monthly bill is going to shock you, and no one wants that.
  • Wear & Tear — Not only does your AC use more energy in the summer, but it also has to work harder. You’re not the only one who struggles under the Florida sun. Your AC has to work extremely hard to cool your home down that much, putting it at risk for more frequent and serious breakdowns.
  • Replacement Costs — If your unit is pushed every summer past its capacity, its lifespan will be significantly reduced. You’re looking at premature AC replacement, which is a big investment to make more often than you need to!

The best temperature to set your thermostat in the summer is 78 degrees. We know that might sound too warm to some people, but it’s the best compromise between your comfort and the health of your AC system. Luckily, we’ve got a few ways you can help your home feel cooler without even touching that thermostat.

Keeping Your Cool

Your AC may be the only thing that actually chills the air in your home, but there are other things you can do to promote cool airflow, too. Try some of these tactics to keep yourself from being uncomfortable inside during the summer months.

Use Your Fans!

Ceiling fans play a huge role in air circulation. When air moves over your skin, it cools tiny droplets of moisture. This is called wind chill, and it can help you feel cooler than the air really is. Make sure your fans are on — and set to push cool air down to the floor where you are. You can also make use of portable fans to increase that airflow across your skin.

Allow Your Air To Ventilate

Your home will have both warm and cool air at all times, but you can make sure that the warm air is being circulated out of your space and into the AC to be chilled easier. Leave internal doors open to allow the system to pump and circulate air efficiently. Also, don’t close vent openings, this will make the system work harder to deliver air to certain spaces.

You should also be aware of how your attic is handling hot air. Heat absorbed from your roof as well as heat that has risen from your living areas gets trapped in your attic. If this air is allowed to sit in your attic, it will eventually begin to affect the air right beneath it through the ceiling. Make sure that your attic has the proper fans and ventilation to expel heat as it enters the space.

Consider An Upgrade

If you’re still miserable in the summer, it might be time to consider an AC replacement. An efficient AC should have no problem chilling and delivering air to your home if you are using it appropriately. An upgraded system will be able to perform more efficiently, meaning it will be able to keep up with demand while not using a massive amount of extra energy.
